Harrison teen killed in traffic crash

A Harrison teen was killed last night when the car in which he was riding crashed into a truck on Freeport Road in the township, police said.

The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the teen as Michael Martinka, 17, of Natrona Heights. He was a rising senior at Highlands High School, the school district said today.

He and three other teens had been riding in a vehicle at 10:17 p.m. when it went out of control and skidded across the road at the intersection with Spring Hill Road.

Police said the roadway was wet with rain, and the teens' vehicle hydroplaned out of control.

Michael was killed when the vehicle crashed into a U-Haul truck, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m. at the scene, the medical examiner said.

Township police and county homicide detectives are investigating the cause of the crash.

Highlands School District said two other passengers, also students at the high school, were also injured. They were identified as Joshua Wiley, 16, also of Harrison, and Jake Mink, 16, of Fawn. They are being treated at hospitals. The driver of the vehicle was not a current Highlands School District student and was not identified.

School psychologists and guidance counselors were at the high school and middle school today and will return tomorrow. The hours ar 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the high school and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the middle school.

Students should use the main office entrances.
