Suspect in ATM robberies dies in apparent suicide
Monday, June 29, 2009

A suspected robber shot and killed himself after he was confronted by police outside his apartment yesterday.

Jonathan Muhl, 27, of Lincoln Club Road in McCandless, died at 9:51 p.m. at Allegheny General Hospital.

A woman was robbed at gunpoint at an automatic teller machine in McCandless on the morning of June 21. Investigators eventually developed Mr. Muhl as a suspect.

The unidentified woman was attempting a transaction at a PNC ATM in the McIntyre Square shopping plaza when a white male with a weapon robbed her.

Police said he had been parked near the ATM as the victim drove up to it. He displayed a silver handgun with black grips and demanded that she withdraw a specified amount of money.

A second robbery was reported at the plaza over the weekend.

Outside Mr. Muhl's residence, he pulled a pistol when confronted by township police, the Allegheny County medical examiner said.

When ordered to drop the weapon, the suspect instead shot himself in the head, the medical examiner said.

His death is being investigated as a potential suicide, a spokesman for the medical examiner said.
