A Fayette County man will spend at least the next six years in prison after he pleaded guilty in connection with the November shooting death of his 12-year-old son.
Michael Muha Jr., 40, of Redstone, agreed to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter in exchange for a jail sentence of 2 1/2 to 5 years.
However, Fayette County President Judge Conrad Capuzzi also sentenced Mr. Muha to a consecutive term of four to eight years for illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
The sentence gives Mr. Muha credit for the approximately seven months he has served since his arrest Nov. 23.
The boy, Michael "Mikey" Muha III, suffered a fatal gunshot wound of the chest during a dispute on that evening.
A gun was involved in a dispute between Mr. Muha and his girlfriend, Tasha Miciotto.
During the argument, Mr. Muha asked Mikey to get his shotgun from his car. A neighbor told police that he heard Mr. Muha yell that he was going to shoot somebody to end an unspecified problem in the household.
Witnesses told police that Mr. Muha was waving the gun around and that it discharged, striking Mikey in the chest.
Mr. Muha told authorities the shooting was an accident, and state police said they did not believe Mr. Muha intended to shoot his son.
A judge last month signed an order that gave Mr. Muha permission to visit his son's grave site at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Smithfield.
