Many Hopewell opponents were "Maxed" out this season. "Max always got the most difficult pitching assignments and he had excellent composure with them," said Hopewell coach Joe Colella. "I think the kids felt once he was on the mound, they were definitely going to win and that was one of the keys to the season." Vogel had a perfect 10-0 pitching record and an ERA of 1.18. He finished with 95 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings and allowed only 51 hits. A co-captain of the team, Vogel also used his hitting to Hopewell to a to a 20-3 record. He batted .354 with eight doubles, six home runs, 26 RBIs and 29 runs scored. He will play next season at Winthrop, an NCAA Division I college.
Blackhawk | Pitcher | Senior
Had superb season on the mound. It was rare when he gave up a run -- or a hit. He finished with a 9-0 record for section champion Cougars. He allowed only three runs and 14 hits, and had 0.43 ERA. Struck out 75 in 49 innings. Will play at Mercyhurst.
Riverview | Outfielder-pitcher | Senior
Selected by the San Francisco Giants in eighth round of draft and signed with the Giants this week, bypassing opportunity to play at Duquesne. Drafted as outfielder. Led entire WPIAL in hitting with a .638 average. Also hit seven home runs.
Canon-McMillan | Shortstop-pitcher | Senior
Three-year starter who had career batting average of .486 and 33 career doubles. This season, had .596 average with 18 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 26 RBIs. Also had a 6-2 pitching record with a 2.17 ERA. Has signed with Winthrop.
Carmichaels | Pitcher-outfielder | Senior
Three-sport standout (football, basketball, baseball) who will play baseball at Slippery Rock. Had 19-1 pitching record past three seasons. This year, was 7-1 with 117 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings. Allowed only 26 hits. Also had .475 average with 19 RBIs.
North Allegheny | Outfielder | Senior
Excellent defensive center fielder who helped North Allegheny win WPIAL AAAA championship. Also was a strong hitter with a .456 average, seven doubles, three triples, 19 RBIs and 31 runs. 17 of 17 in stolen base attempts. Has signed with Maryland.
South Park | Outfielder-pitcher | Senior
Came back after wrist surgery to hit .381 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored. Opponents feared his bat, evidenced by his 22 walks. 2-0 as a pitcher with two saves. Drafted in 38th round by Detroit Tigers, but will play at North Carolina State.
Pine-Richland | Third baseman | Senior
Was a standout on a team with four Division I college players. Kuban will attend West Virginia University. A 6-2, 200-pounder who was a four-year starter. Hit .434 for WPIAL Class AAAA runner-up Rams with five home runs and 34 RBIs.
Moon | Shortstop-pitcher | Senior
Three-year starter who hit .440 for WPIAL AAA champs. Also had eight doubles, five triples, four home runs, 33 RBIs and school-record 39 runs scored. Had two saves as pitcher. Will play at Radford. Twenty-five years ago, his father, Phil Sr., made All-Area team.
Seton-LaSalle | Pitcher-infielder | Senior
Selected by Texas Rangers in 28th round of draft. If doesn't sign, will attend Miami Dade Community College (Fla.). Had 3-2 pitching record with 1.70 ERA, and 55 strikeouts in 39 innings. Hit .428 with four home runs, 17 runs and 20 RBIs.
