Even before the national economy tanked in the fall, 30 percent of Pennsylvania's acute care hospitals were losing money, according to a financial analysis by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council released today.
Among local hospitals, Canonsburg General had the biggest loss, 9.67 percent, in total margin, while UPMC Braddock and UPMC South Side had total margin losses exceeding 7 percent.
The report, based on data from the 2007-08 fiscal year, also showed that hospitals' uncompensated care grew 11.1 percent, or about $75 million.
