Chris Young will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today because of inflammation in his right shoulder, meaning the top two pitchers for the struggling San Diego Padres will be out of action.
The 6-foot-10 Young was hit hard in losing his past four starts, including allowing four home runs June 9 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He knew he would miss at least his scheduled start tonight against the Oakland A's.
Ace Jake Peavy was placed on the DL Saturday, a day after learning he would be out at least a month because of a strained tendon behind his right ankle.
"It stinks. I hate that. I hate that for the guys," Young said. "But I think it got to a point where my performance was hurting the team more than helping, and I needed to get this better so I could have some impact when I do come back."
Young (4-6, 5.21 ERA) had a second cortisone shot Wednesday night.
St. Louis activated infielder Khalil Greene from a stint on the 15-day disabled list for social anxiety disorder. Greene had been on the DL since May 29 and missed 19 games. He played in four games at Memphis during his rehab and was 6 for 15 with two doubles, while playing two games at third.
Detroit has placed struggling left-hander Dontrelle Willis on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder. Willis is 1-4 with a 7.49 ERA. He has walked 18 in 11 innings in his past three starts.
Left-hander Oliver Perez is getting back on track. Perez, on the disabled list since May 7, threw 48 pitches in three shutout innings of an extended spring training game at the Mets' rehab facility. He gave up three hits and one walk, and struck out five in the pain-free performance.
Raul Ibanez has gone on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin. Ibanez is batting .312 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs, ranking second in the NL in homers and RBIs.
Dusty Rhodes, who helped the New York Giants win their last World Series title in 1954, died Wednesday of cardiopulmonary arrest in Las Vegas. He was 82. Rhodes played with the New York Giants from 1952-57, then appeared in 54 games for the San Francisco Giants in 1959. He had a .253 career average, 54 homers and 207 RBIs.
