Convention center upgrading telecom ahead of G-20 summit
Thursday, June 18, 2009

Officials are making sure those attending the G-20 summit at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in September stay connected.

The Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority board awarded two contracts this morning aimed at ensuring there will be adequate internet service and telephone and data lines for the summit and other events at the convention center.

Smart City/Priority Networks was awarded a three-year contract to provide telecommunications services at the venue. The company will be responsible for wired and wireless internet service and land-line telephone and data service.

Mark Leahy, convention center general manager, said Smart City currently provides the service. But he added he wanted the new contract in place now to "get them on board so they can get going for the G-20." The convention center has the capability to handle up to 2,000 phone lines and expects to need at least 500 to 600 for the summit.

The SEA board also approved a 90-day lease agreement with AT&T to add a cell phone antenna to the convention center specifically to ensure there is adequate coverage for the summit. The antenna would be the first for cell phones at the facility.

AT&T will pay the SEA $10,000 for the right. After 90 days, AT&T will determine whether it wants to enter into a longer-term lease.
