PG South: Bethel Park teammates together for one final game at Big 33 Classic
Thursday, June 18, 2009

When John Schademan and Lyle Marsh walked dejectedly off the field Dec. 13, they figured it was the final time they would be together on the same football team.

Turns out, they get one more chance -- on the same field.

Seniors at Bethel Park, Schademan and Marsh were key components in the Black Hawks' dream season that had 15 consecutive wins and included the school's first WPIAL Class AAAA football title and PIAA championship game appearance.

Schademan, a wide receiver/free safety, and Marsh, a running back/defensive back, will be on the same football team Saturday in the Big 33 Classic at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pa. It's the same stadium where Bethel Park lost a 28-21 overtime thriller to Bethlehem Liberty in the PIAA Class AAAA final in December.

"It's definitely really great that we both got selected to play in this and we can play one last game together," Schademan said.

"It's just fun having him here for the week," Marsh said. "It's nice to know I'll be playing with him one last time."

They hope to lead Pennsylvania past Ohio in the annual all-star game. They have known each other since their days at Washington Elementary School and have played together since joining the same midget team at age 7.

Not expected to be one of the top teams in the WPIAL, Bethel Park beat everyone in its en route to the PIAA title game.

"It's great, now that everything is over with it and it's all settled down, looking back and taking in what we did," Schademan said. "It was a great accomplishment by all my teammates and everything."

"It really set in after the season was over," Marsh said. "You started to realize that it was a really big thing for the school and community."

Schademan was one of the most productive receivers in the WPIAL, catching 55 passes for 1,180 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns.

The only Black Hawks player to score more often was Marsh, who, despite missing two games due to injury, had 27 touchdowns while rushing for 1,504 yards. Marsh is headed for the University of Pennsylvania where he will play running back.

"I've always played tailback since I was much younger," he said. "I've always just really loved it."

Schademan will play receiver at Colgate. The fact that he is attending a Patriot League school and Marsh an Ivy League institution is not lost on him.

"It's definitely great that we both focused on academics and athletics at the same time," Schademan said. "We got to go to schools that emphasize and have great programs for both."

Schademan (6 feet, 190 pounds) and Marsh (6-1, 215) are the only teammates from the WPIAL to be selected for the Big 33 Classic, which dates to 1957. As the organizers love to point out, there hasn't been a Super Bowl played without Big 33 alumni.

"It was exciting finding out I was chosen because I know the history of the game," Marsh said.

The game is just one part of the week in Hershey. Players stay with host families and take part in events and activities and community service work the whole time they're there.

"It's already been a wonderful experience," Schademan said.
