For the second time in less than three years, the Hollywood Theatre on Potomac Avenue in Dormont is making a comeback.
Beginning July 10, the 300-seat theater will open on Friday and Saturday nights for "classic" movies, said borough Council President John Maggio.
Plans are for movies such as "The Godfather," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and some starring Cary Grant and the Marx Brothers to be featured. Mr. Maggio said the movies will start at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $5.
The theater closed last June, and Mr. Maggio said he recently approached the Bradley Center, which signed a 10-year lease on the property in 2006, with the idea of reopening the facility on a limited basis in hopes of attracting a full-time operator. The property is owned by Hollywood Partners LLP.
"And it would offer entertainment to our seniors at an affordable price, while ... helping to revitalize our business district and attract young people and families to our town," he said.
Mr. Maggio said other than the projectionist, the theater will be staffed by volunteers.
"I am getting calls and e-mails every day from people offering their time and services," he said.
Local special effects guru Tom Savini is scheduled to appear in August to hold a question-and-answer session, Mr. Maggio said.
Lisa Fox, chief executive officer of the Bradley Center, said the group would still be responsible for theater maintenance, operations and cost of insurance and the projectionist.
