HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Chelsa Wagner, D-Beechview, has done something very unusual for a member of the state House -- given birth to a baby while in office.
She and her husband, Khari Mosley, today announced the birth of their son, Thaddeus Wagner Mosley, yesterday at 9:11 p.m. at Magee Hospital. The baby weighed in at 9 pounds, 15 ounces.
Ms. Wagner is only the third sitting state representative in over 20 years to give birth while in office. A Montgomery County legislator, Lois Sherman Hagarty, gave birth to a son in 1985, during her tenure of 1980-92, and a Philadelphia legislator, Frances Weston, gave birth to two daughters, one in 1983 and one in 1986, while she served from 1981 to 1990.
The couple is "tired but overjoyed,'' said Ms. Wagner's aide, Heidi Tappe.
Ms. Wagner, in a statement, said, "I'm lucky to have a great support network, especially my husband Khari, who will be traveling with me to Harrisburg. This will also help me understand the challenges faced by so many women who work and raise a family.''
She hopes to be back in Harrisburg soon, to participate in difficult talks about the new state budget, after she's cleared to travel. Mr. Mosley is the national political director for the League of Young Voters.
