At Junglewood Vacation Treehouse, me Jane, you Tarzan
Sunday, June 14, 2009

Raystown Lake is a boon for vacationers who love to be on the water. But what if beautiful scenery is what floats your boat?

You might consider a getaway to Junglewood Vacation Treehouse, a B&B-style boutique hotel room perched high above the marina at Lake Raystown Resort.

There's the treehouses that we remember from childhood, and then there are treehouses. Junglewood is the latter, although if we're going to get technical, it isn't so much a house constructed among a tree's branches as an elevated one-room luxury retreat surrounded by greenery.

The contemporary jungle-style accommodations for two in James Creek (think leopard prints and tons of thatching) include an efficiency kitchen, a satellite dish TV, a stereo system that plays music inside and out and a small deck overlooking the resort's marina. There's also a hot tub on the lower level with a view through the trees of the water with an adjoining outdoor shower. Tarzan and Jane never had it so good.

Owners J.B. and Cynthia Garrett came up with the idea for the vacation spot five years ago, shortly after building a new home on 3 acres in the Shy Beaver Lakeview Estates development. (J.B. is the builder/developer.)

They'd built a treehouse for their kids at their York home when they were small and always had fond memories of it; why not construct one just up the hill from their house that they, as adults, could stay in and enjoy panoramic views of Raystown Lake?

"And it just evolved," says Mrs. Garrett. "It was such a beautiful spot, we decided to turn it into a rental."

The treehouse is $225 a night and includes a continental breakfast the next morning, as well as use of a thatched-roofed tiki bar with refrigerator and running water.

But you have to be quick if you're hoping for a weekend visit. Friday and Saturday night stays typically sell out within a few days of the booking office opening for business on Feb. 1, says Mrs. Garrett. But they still have a few midweek openings through the end of 2009.

"We always promote the treehouse's peacefulness," says Mrs. Garrett. "It's a very calming experience up there for couples who want to get away and have quiet time."
