Chartiers Valley administrator hires lawyer after contract opens up conflict
Thursday, June 11, 2009

Chartiers Valley assistant superintendent Tammy Whitfield has hired an attorney following the school board's decision to open up her contract and consider other candidates for her job.

Solicitor Al Maiello told about 50 residents and teachers at Tuesday's meeting that board members would not be able to discuss Dr. Whitfield's situation because they received notice that she is represented by counsel.

"We're in a totally different arena than we were before. The board is not in a position to discuss [this]," he said, adding that her attorney's position "had nothing to do with the resolution that was passed last month."

That action, which was not on the agenda, was taken May 26 in accordance with the public school code requirement of 150 days notice for a contract position that is being opened up, Mr. Maiello explained.

He added, too, that the board's decision "was no reflection on her." The last day of Dr. Whitfield's contract is Oct. 31.

The vote to open her position was 6-3, with supporters arguing it was the fiscally responsible thing to do and the dissenters pointing to her dedication and work ethic.

Prior to Mr. Maiello's statements, strong pleas of support were registered from a group of teachers and a district parent.

Gina Switala, who spoke on behalf of about a dozen teachers, praised Dr. Whitfield as a well-respected and valuable asset who is an advocate for everyone in Chartiers Valley.

"If everyone in this room was as dedicated in their chosen field as Dr. Whitfield, just think what great things could be accomplished," she added to applause.

Melanie Brunner of Scott, a parent of four, attested to Dr. Whitfield's guidance and support for struggling students.

"I knew she was there and I hope she will continue to be there," she said. Her comments also were met with applause.

Dr. Whitfield, of Collier, who holds degrees from Grove City College, Robert Morris University and Duquesne University, started at Chartiers Valley as a substitute teacher in 1988. She was hired as a middle teacher and later was promoted into several administrative positions. She has been serving as assistant superintendent since October 2004.
