The first class has been selected for the district's Hall of Honor, which salutes graduates who have received statewide or national recognition for their endeavors. Nominees must have graduated at least 10 years before they are eligible.
Here are the Hall of Honor members:
Robert Ackerman, author, professor and director of the Mid-Atlantic Addiction Research & Training Institute at Indiana University of Pennsylvania;
Kelvin Fisher, West Coast scout for Pittsburgh Steelers;
Mike Lucci, National Football League player with Cleveland from 1962-64 and with Detroit from 1965-73;
Mickey Marotti, director of strength and conditioning at University of Florida;
Doreen Welsh, flight attendant on board US Airways plane that made an emergency landing in February in the Hudson River in New York;
George Vujnovich, 1933 graduate, helped save more than 513 U.S. Airmen in World War II during a secret "Operation Halyard" mission;
David L. Woten Jr., North Allegheny School District teacher named 2008 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.
The school district inducted five new members, all Coraopolis High School graduates, to its Wall of Fame during a recent academic awards ceremony:
Ronald Bliwas, Class of 1960, head of A. Elcoff & Co.;
David Grace, Class of 1966, criminal investigator for the U.S. Department of Justice;
Donna Jo McDaniel, Class of 1964, Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge;
Arnold Thomas, Class of 1957, dentist for 36 years in Coraopolis and Moon;
Shirley Rowe Trkula, Class of 1952, former Coraopolis district justice who was elected in 1991 and served two terms.
The total number of inductees is 21 since the program was created in 2007.
The Junior Achievement Impact Award was presented to Holy Child Catholic School in Bridgeville as "a leader in providing all students the opportunity to benefit from high quality community-based economic education."
Holy Child School is conducting an open enrollment period for new registrations in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.The district has received a $5,000 grant for fitness equipment, such as pedometers, that will allow children to exercise and monitor their physical activity as part of gym classes and encourage them to develop lifelong habits of health and fitness.
The program will be conducted next year at Burkett and Ingram elementary schools.
The Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative has awarded the district a $70,096 federal grant under the Safe Routes to Schools Project to create safer walking routes to connect J.H. Brooks and McCormick elementary schools to residential areas.
Sidewalks will be installed along Hassam and Beaver Grade roads, according to state Sen. John Pippy, R-Moon, and state Rep. Mark Mustio, R-Moon, who jointly announced the grant.
The state transportation initiative was developed by the state Department of Transportation to implement projects that promote integrated land use and transportation.
School directors unanimously approved the renewal of the technical support contract with Siemens Building Technologies Inc., at a cost of $27,492, an increase of $508.Propel Montour School in Kennedy has received the Charles Gray Award from the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, the first charter school to be recognized with the award.
The award committee praised Propel's CreativeArts program because every child participates in arts education every day; partnerships are maintained with local arts organizations; full-time certified art and music teachers are on staff; and daily collaboration with music, art and visiting arts organizations creates a sequential learning environment.
Propel Montour received a $3,000 cash prize for arts programming.
Sister Anna Marie Gaglia, who has served as interim principal of St. John of God School in McKees Rocks since April 2008, has been appointed principal of the school.
The Rev. Louis Vallone, pastor of St. John of God, made the announcement May 26.
Sister Anna Marie became interim principal following the death of Sister Margaret Berry, who had served as principal since 1999. Both sisters are members of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden.
Sister Anna Marie has been guidance director and principal at Quigley Catholic High School and has worked at the Irene Stacey Mental Health Center in Butler County.
St. Joseph School in Coraopolis will offer tutoring this summer for elementary school students in St. Joseph School and in public schools.
One-hour sessions will be provided for children currently in kindergarten through eighth grade in language arts (reading, spelling, English, writing and phonics), math and science.
Classes will cost $20 per hour and be held between 9 a.m. and noon at St. Joseph School, 1313 Fifth Ave. Tutoring will be scheduled according to the responses received. Call 412-264-6141.
The district donated 202 pieces of used classroom furniture to Food For the Poor, a charitable organization that will ship the furniture to Jamaica for use in impoverished schools in that country.
McKee Elementary fifth-grader Stephanie Accorsi presented a check for $300 to Larry Ferrilli and Sam Muoio, of the Pittsburgh Police SWAT Team, for the Fallen Heroes Fund to benefit the families of recently slain Pittsburgh Police Officers Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle. The money was raised by students.
