PG South: Trinity's 'best season ever' ends with a loss in PIAA semifinals
Thursday, June 11, 2009

The most successful season in the history of Trinity High School softball came to an end Monday.

The Hillers dropped a 6-2 decision to Greencastle-Antrim in the PIAA Class AAA semifinals, held at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg.

"It's a little disappointing to come this far and fall short of the PIAA title game, but I'm very proud of the girls and what they've accomplished," Trinity coach Linda Rebish said. "This team went further than any team in school history. That's something to be proud of."

Trinity finished the season with a 14-9 record, which included four losses in its final five regular season games.

"We grew together as a team as the season went along," said Rebish, when asked to assess the Hillers unexpected run in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs. "I told the girls that how they do in the playoffs will be their legacy.

"Once we started winning, the girls realized if they put it all together we could accomplish more."

Trinity qualified for postseason play by placing third in Section 3-AAA, but was not seeded in the 12-team WPIAL bracket. The Hillers opened the playoffs with a 4-0 shutout of No. 7 Kittanning, then upset No. 2 Yough, 3-2, in the quarterfinals. The Hillers advanced to the title game with a surprisingly easy 10-1 victory against No. 6 West Allegheny in the semifinals.

"That was only the second time in school history that we played in a WPIAL championship game," said Rebish, noting that the 1999 Hillers squad also accomplished that feat.

Trinity's hopes of winning its first WPIAL title were thwarted by unbeaten Franklin Regional, as the Panthers recorded a 2-0 victory in the title game.

But Trinity's season was not over as the Hillers posted a pair of victories in the PIAA playoffs. The Hillers opened with a 9-0 win against City League runner-up Perry, then recorded a 6-5 win in the quarterfinals against District 10 champion Corry.

That set up Monday's semifinal game against Greencastle-Antrim, the District 3 champion.

"Our wins against Perry and Corry were the first PIAA wins in school history," Rebish said. "It's just too bad that we couldn't win a couple more and become the first state champs."

Trinity's semifinal downfall began in the third inning when the Hillers allowed four runs. One run scored on a bases loaded walk, two scored on passed balls and the fourth scored on an error.

"We gave them four runs in the third inning,' Rebish said. "We gave up two more runs in the fourth inning and one was earned. That put us down, 6-0. You can't give a team any runs in a game of this importance and expect to win."

Trinity scored single runs in the fourth and sixth inning. Singles by Chelsea McWreath and Courtney Brown produced the first run. Ashley Morran capped the Hillers scoring with a home run over the center field fence

"Ashley finished the season with six home runs," Rebish said.

Rebish has a senior-laden lineup with six starters graduating. They are shortstop Kilee Bonazza, third baseman Chelsea McWreath, pitcher Michelle Massi, first baseman Jordan Shrontz, and the Brown twins, right fielder Courtney and left fielder Megan Brown.

"We certainly have some rebuilding to do," Rebish said. "But I'm very confident that next year's team will be competitive."
