McKeesport man gets probation for fake bank bomb
Wednesday, June 10, 2009

A man who kept police at bay for two hours last year as he threatened to blow up a McKeesport bank with a fake bomb pleaded guilty today.

Charles Cottle, 39, was sentenced to time served at the Allegheny County Jail and five years of probation. Mr. Cottle has been in jail since the April 24, 2008, incident.

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Mr. Cottle will be released from the jail into a residential treatment program for mental health problems as soon as space becomes available. Mr. Cottle told Common Pleas Judge Anthony M. Mariani that he is on medication to keep from hearing voices.

Mr. Cottle has a history of mental illness and was off his medication at the time of the incident. As a condition of his probation, Mr. Cottle will follow a service plan prescribed by Allegheny County Justice-Related Services, which will determine when he can be released from the residential program.

Mr. Cottle entered guilty pleas on charges of possessing a facsimile weapon of mass destruction, making a bomb threat, unlawful restraint and terroristic threats.

According to police, Mr. Cottle entered the PNC Bank on Lysle Boulevard in McKeesport with two paint cans duct taped to his chest claiming he was going to blow the place up. There were 10 people inside the bank at the time.

After a two-hour standoff, Mr. Cottle surrendered to police.
