Shaler had only one hit in yesterday's PIAA Class AAAA semifinal softball game and also made three errors. But the Titans are still going to the championship game.
Shaler (16-5) took advantage of some Central Bucks South miscues and came away with a 2-1 victory yesterday afternoon at Shippensburg University.
Shaler will play for the championship Friday at Shippensburg against Parkland, which defeated Waynesboro, 2-0, in another semifinal.
"We were a lucky team today," said Shaler coach Skip Palmer. "We have to shore up the defense for the next game. But their two pitchers were good. It was ugly, but we'll take it."
Shaler scored both of its runs in the fourth inning. Lauren Hackett had a one-out single for the Titans' only hit of the game. Holly Pefferman grounded into a force-out before Brittney DeFazio was hit by a pitch.
Abby Nichter hit a pop fly that was dropped by Central Bucks South's second baseman, allowing pinch-runner Candace Tabroski to score and DeFazio to move to third. DeFazio then scored on a wild pitch.
Nichter pitched a two-hitter for Shaler, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Central Bucks South (23-3), a suburban Philadelphia team, made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Molly Hare singled and scored on Haileigh Stucks' double. After an error put runners on first and second, Shaler got a groundout, but the runners moved to second and third.
But Nichter got a foul ball popup to third and a strikeout to end the game.
"We didn't play well and we won," Palmer said. "We have to play better the next time we're here [Friday]."
Shaler will be the only WPIAL team in the PIAA championships.
Greencastle-Antrim 6, Trinity 2: Trinity (14-9) committed four errors and saw its season end with a loss at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg.
Greencastle-Antrim (24-3) broke the game open with four runs in the third inning. The Blue Devils scored twice in the fourth and Trinity never recovered.
Shannon Falleroni had two hits for Trinity and Ashley Morran had a solo home run in the sixth.
Bald Eagle Area 1, Riverside 0: The WPIAL champion Panthers (20-2) saw their season end with a loss at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg. Riverside pitcher (18-2) Kari Falk gave up only four hits but lost for just the second time this year. She struck out six. Riverside had four hits off Bald Eagle pitcher Megan Shaw, who struck out seven and walked one.
"We've been hitting these pitchers in the playoffs," said Riverside coach Pam McCarty. "[Shaw] was nothing different, but we just couldn't hit her."
Bald Eagle (23-3) got the only run of the game in the top of the third. Courtney Switzer singled, moved to second on an error and scored on Lily Glunt's two-out single.
Riverside did not have a runner reach third base and the Panthers did not have more than one hit in an inning. Falk, Chelsea Evans, Kalli Osborne and Kassi Osborne had Riverside's hits.
"I'm disappointed at the outcome, but Bald Eagle deserves a lot of credit," McCarty said.
Curwensville 4, Vincentian 0: Vincentian (22-3) had been averaging five runs a game in the postseason, but the Royals were held scoreless in yesterday's semifinal at Slippery Rock.
Curwensville (25-1) had eight hits off Vincentian standout pitcher Nina Melvin, who struck out six. Curwensville pitcher Holly Landsberry limited Vincentian to three hits and struck out eight. Vincentian did not have a runner reach second base.
Curwensville jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Shannon McDonald hit a solo home run. Molly Demchak, Tess Bloom and Sarah Clark also had RBIs in the game.
Ale Zozos had two hits for Vincentian.
