The Baldwin-Whitehall School District is investigating a discrepancy in a check written from the school renovation fund.
Superintendent Lawrence Korchnak said that about two weeks ago, PNC notified the district that two checks had been written with the same number. The district contacted Whitehall police and hired forensic auditors to investigate.
Dr. Korchnak said the auditors will be looking at the construction account as well as other accounts to see whether any money is missing. No one has been accused of any wrong-doing.
The district recently completed a $64-million high school renovation project, which came in about $1 million under budget.
In a separate action, the school board last week unanimously voted to terminate the contract of business manager Jennifer Pesanka, who had held the job for about three years.
Dr. Korchnak said he could not elaborate because it is a personnel matter. "It had to do with her job responsibilities," he said.
In another development, the district is mourning the death of Ms. Pesanka's secretary, Linda McWreath, 53, who had worked for the district for about seven years, Dr. Korchnak said.
Ms. McWreath's body was found May 27 at the Buena Vista boat launch, in the Youghiogheny River, about five or six feet from shore. Her car was parked about 100 feet away. Cause of death is under investigation.
