TV Q&A with Rob Owen
Friday, June 05, 2009

Submit your question to Rob Owen.

This week's TV Q&A responds to questions about "The Unusuals," "Life" and "CSI: Miami." As always, thanks for reading, and keep those questions coming.

-- Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor

Q: ABC recently canceled the show "The Unusuals." Is there any talk about another network possibly picking it up? It's come to the point where I'm on the verge of boycotting anything and everything aired on ABC. They bring on great shows to the likes of "Traveler," "Life on Mars", and "The Unusuals," put them in too-competitive time slots without giving them a real shot at success and then cancel them.

-- Tony, 34, Pasadena

Rob: I guess we might disagree on what constitutes a "great show." For my money, "Mars" is the only one that fits the bill, and it got canceled even though it was a favorite of ABC executives. As I recall, "Traveler" aired in the summer so that one wasn't done in by competition so much as viewer apathy. "The Unusuals," which won't be back on any network, was simply ignored by the viewing public, which is why ABC canceled it.

Q: When will new episodes of HBO's "Entourage" be airing this summer? Also, is "Monk" returning this summer?

-- Elaine, 54, Mt. Lebanon

Rob: We had a handy-dandy list of summer series premiere dates in Wednesday's paper. (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09154/974503-67.stm) "Entourage" returns July 12 and "Monk" is back for the first portion of its final season Aug. 7.

Q: Please tell me that NBC's "Life" will be returning!

-- Linda, 52, Cranberry

Rob: I could tell you that "Life" will be back, but I would be lying.

Q: I know Howie Mandell has had some illness this past year but will NBC bring Back "Deal or No Deal" as a weekly show. It was so exciting to watch and then all of a sudden it is gone. Was it just planned to get a following then take it to syndication? Are the syndication shows repeats of the full one hour shows broken apart?

-- Bryan, 44, Bethel Park

Rob: NBC has not picked up additional episodes of the prime-time "Deal" but is "keeping our options open," per an NBC publicist (e.g. if something fails and they need a quick replacement, "Deal" may be called upon).

Q: Any word on the status of "Deal or No Deal" for the fall? I didn't see anything about it being cancelled, but I also didn't see it on NBC's fall schedule. Might it comeback as a replacement series?

-- Mike, 44, White Oak

Rob: Who knew there was such love for watching people gamble (as opposed to participating)?

Original "Deal" episodes continue to air in daytime syndication and we reported last week (http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/tunedin/archive/2009/05/27/my-network-tv-announces-fall-plans.aspx) that reruns will air in prime time on My Network TV come fall. That seems like more than enough "Deal" to me.

Q: "CSI: Miami" has no good actors. It is poorly written. Why is it so popular?

-- William, 59, Pittsburgh

Rob: I agree that David Caruso is sort of awful and the writing is lousy. I did like Emily Procter on "West Wing" but haven't been able to bring myself to watch "CSI: Miami" for quite some time after suffering through one particularly terrible episode a few years back. Clearly some viewers like it, but why that may be, who knows?

Q: Do you have any information on when/if BBC America will be in HD?

The reason I'm interested was from last week's Tuned In column that stated "Dr. Who" will move from Sci Fi Channel to BBCA. Sci Fi is available in HD, but BBCA is not.

-- Ken, 42, Manchester, Conn.

Rob: Just this week, after Ken's question arrived, BBC America announced it will begin an HD channel July 20. But so far no cable systems have announced plans to carry BBCA HD. Much can change between now and July, but as of now, a Comcast spokesman said, "No plans at this time to add BBC America HD."

Q: Any word out there about "Miami Ink" coming back?

-- Deborah, 54, Swissvale

Rob: It won't be back; the show is no longer in production.

Q: I love "Legend of The Seeker." Is the show over or will it return with new episodes?

-- Christine, 68, Pittsburgh

Rob: It will be back in the fall with new episodes.

Q: A&E used to have the most delightful English detective programs. There is a whole bunch of us out here who miss those programs terribly. So easy on the nervous system.

-- Judith, 66, St. Louis, Missouri

Rob: I've complained before about A&E abandoning the mission its initials signify: arts and entertainment. Now your best bet for British detectives is PBS's "Masterpice: Mystery!" which begins a new season June 21.

Q: I'm a latecomer to ABC's "Lost" (I started with the fourth season). I've been catching up on the older episodes by DVRing the Sci Fi Channel's reairing of the earlier seasons at 4 p.m. What I have found is that certain days they'll skip showing the show for other shows (which is fine and understandable). But what isn't fine is that they skip the episode of "Lost" that would have shown on that day and as far as I can tell never show it. For example, on May 28th they showed a "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode when Episode 13, "Hearts and Mind," should have been shown. On Friday they showed Episode 14, "Special," and never showed 13. Thankfully with internet it's easy to find out what I missed but it is annoying and I can't think of any reason they would skip episodes. On a show like "Lost," I would think they would make an effort to show the repeats in order and not skip anything. Any idea why they skip the episdoes?

-- Bill, 41, Upper St. Clair

Rob: On the one hand, cable networks routinely rerun episodes of series out of order, a lousy practice that is anything but viewer-friendly.

In this particular case, a Sci Fi Channel publicist said the pre-emption was the result of a last-minute schedule change and all the episodes of "Lost" that Sci Fi has the rights to had already been aired at least once. That's one of the dangers when you're late to the party: Some of the food may be gone.

Q; Why does KDKA news not broadcast in HD? They also do not broadcast "The Nightly Sports Call" on The CW in HD. I do not understand this. I like some of their people but I will not watch their news if it is not in HD. The difference between HD & non-HD is like viewing something underwater with and then without goggles.

-- Joe, 34, Pittsburgh

Rob: What appears to be a long, local nightmare for some Pittsburgh viewers will come to an end June 15 when, if all goes according to plan, KDKA will finally broadcast its newscasts in HD from a revamped set with improved lighting.

Q: You must check this out. Someone recut Comcast's On Demand version of "Rocky" (just posted at midnight Sunday in the free movie section) so that after Rocky seduces Adrian for the first time, the next scene cuts seamlessly to a scene in "Rocky 2" where Adrian is pregnant. "Rocky 2" continues from that point.

It's very confusing to watch because a few scenes later Rocky and Apollo are at a news conference discussing a rematch and they haven't even fought yet.

The switheroo occurs a few minutes after the 55 minute mark.

-- Jim, Pittsburgh

Rob: Good catch, Jim.

Here's the response from Comcast spokeswoman Jody Doherty: "First of all, thank you for bringing this to our attention. This obviously was an error. The content is provided to us by the distributor. We have deleted the version called into question and have replaced it with the 'Rocky' movies in their entirety. Viewers can enjoy Rocky 1 through 5 free of charge On Demand. Again we appreciate your readers inquiry."
