Sprint cars with or without wings, take your pick
Thursday, June 04, 2009

It's a smorgasbord of sprint car racing in western Pennsylvania this weekend.

Lernerville Speedway hosts the O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions at 7 p.m. today in Sarver. Tomorrow, winged sprint cars take to Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for the first time in more than ten years. Also tomorrow, the USAC National Sprint Car Series makes its first ever stop at Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer.

In their first visit of 2009 at Lernerville, the All Stars have a few familiar names and faces at the top of the point standings.

Tim Shaffer from Aliquippa leads Dale Blaney of Fowler, Ohio by only 29 points. The last time the two battled at Lernerville, it was Shaffer taking the win.

Both Shaffer and Blaney cut their sprint car driving teeth at Lernerville. Over their careers, Shaffer has seven wins while Blaney, a three-time All Star Champion, has eight wins at the Sarver oval.

While Shaffer and Blaney will have their share of fans rooting for them at Lernerville, the Big Man On Campus is still Ed Lynch Jr., of Apollo.

Lynch Jr. won for the fourth time this year at Lernerville Friday for career win number 98; Lynch has won 97 features in a sprint car.

Lynch took the new chassis he debuted at Lernerville to victory lane and plans on running the same mount tonight against the All Stars.

Nicknamed the "Apollo Rocket," Lynch always looks forward to racing against Blaney and Shaffer.

"Dale [Blaney] is at the top of his game with two wins last weekend and Tim [Shaffer] has won races this year as well. We'll race each other hard," Lynch said.

Sprints return to PPMS

Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway is bringing back the sprints at 7 p.m. tomorrow after a long absence.

Lynch is looking forward to tomorrow's race.

"My very first win in a sprint car was at PPMS in a blue number 44 many years ago," Lynch said. "It's great that the Mileys are bringing in the sprint cars."

Lynch will be using a different car at PPMS than what he'll use tonight because the Monster-Half Mile is larger and has different characteristics than the smaller surface at Lernerville.

Along with the 20-lap, $2,500 to-win sprint race, it's the 33-lap PENNational for the Super Late Models and extended races for the other divisions.

No wings over Mercer

It's the USAC non-wing National Sprint Series at 7 p.m. tomorrow at MRP for the 30-lap USAC feature, with $5,000 going to the winner.

With USAC completing the eastern swing at Mercer, many local competitors including Arnie Kent, Charlie Holben and Scott Priester, among others, plan to go wingless tomorrow at Mercer Raceway Park.
