The U.S. Postal Service has notified customers in Harmony, Butler County, that it will suspend operations of the post office there -- at least temporarily -- at the close of business June 30.
Customers were notified by letter over the weekend.
Beginning July 1, delivery and retail services will be provided to Harmony customers by the Zelienople post office, said Donald Snyder, manager of post office operations.
Rural route customers in Jackson and Lancaster who are served out of the Harmony post office will not experience any change in service, he said.
The Postal Service will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. June 10 in the Seneca Valley High School auditorium to discuss the situation.
Mr. Snyder said the temporary closing was brought on by safety concerns for the workers in the small office.
The Postal Service occupies 660 square feet in the Harmony Borough Building, under a lease that expires June 30.
"I can't ignore the situation," he said. "That facility does not meet our needs. It's unacceptable in any work environment."
Mr. Snyder said for about 15 years the Postal Service has been looking at ways to increase its space in the borough but has been unsuccessful.
Harmony's postmaster retired Jan. 15 and a postmaster from a neighboring office has served in that capacity in the interim, he said.
Mr. Snyder said the letter carriers now working out of Harmony will be relocated to Zelienople.
