Just in time for the start of summer, a new city Web site will help residents enjoy the outdoors without breaking their budgets.
At a press conference in Riverview Park on Monday afternoon, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy President and CEO Meg Cheever announced the start of a new online initiative -- www.parksarefree.com -- that will ensure that Pittsburgh residences take advantage of free events and activities at the city's public parks.
Previously, events at the parks were advertised on different Web sites, depending on whether the park was owned by the city or by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, City Spokeswoman Joanna Doven said. Now, events taking place at all Pittsburgh parks will be featured together on the consolidated "Parks Are Free" Web site. Ms. Doven said the site is meant to serve as a "one-stop shop" for residents interested in attending outdoor events in Pittsburgh.
Upcoming park events for the summer include the Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park series, which runs from June 9 to Aug. 24, and the Stars at Riverview Jazz Series, which runs from June 13 to Aug. 22.
