Reconstruction work will close Route 28 outbound at Etna beginning Sunday, sending motorists on a detour across the Allegheny River.
The road will close at the Etna interchange at 6 p.m. Sunday and remain closed around-the-clock through late October as crews replace the bridge that carries Route 28 over the 62nd Street Bridge, PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said. Northbound traffic will be required to exit onto northbound Route 8 or into Sharpsburg at Exit 5A to reach the 62nd Street Bridge.
The detour will follow the 62nd Street Bridge, Butler Street and the Highland Park Bridge back to Route 28. Up to 25,000 vehicles use the highway on a typical weekday.
Also, at 6 a.m. next Monday, the ramp from southbound Route 8 to northbound Route 28 at the Etna interchange that has been closed since August will reopen. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane on northbound Route 28 from the Route 8 on-ramp to the Highland Park Bridge. Northbound traffic will use the left passing lane (right lane closed) to the bridge that carries Route 28 over Kittanning Pike. There, traffic will shift onto the right lane (left lane closed) to the Highland Park Bridge. Traffic will remain in this pattern for several months, Mr. Struzzi said.
Lane restrictions on southbound Route 28 from Etna to Millvale will continue this week. Southbound traffic will be limited to a single lane from 7 tonight to 5 a.m. tomorrow and each night through Thursday, and then around-the-clock from 7 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. next Monday.
