Deer management tour May 31
Whether you're trying to get deer in your sights or get them out of your garden, a Game Lands Habitat and Deer Management Tour is worth the drive north. Located near Ridgeway in Elk County, State Game Land 44 is a region once nearly devoid of white-tailed deer, where post-timbering regeneration sparked population growth that the Game Commission manages through manipulating hunting seasons and bag limits. Wildlife Conservation Officer John Dzemyan leads the walking and driving tour profiling vegetation growth within fenced exclosures protected from deer, and habitat depletion outside the fences. Dress suitably for short walks in the woods and fields; jackets or rain gear may be needed. High clearance vehicles are preferred, though four-wheel drive is not necessary. The tour is free and open to the public. Meets 1 p.m. at the Old CCC Camps in Carmen, Pa., current site of the Game Commission Food and Cover Crew Headquarters, located on Game Commission Road. Tour ends with refreshments at about 5 p.m. For directions and other details contact WCO Dzemyan at 570-398-4744.
