Why can the Penguins show some games outside Mellon Arena but not others?
Saturday, May 30, 2009

Only Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup finals, to be televised on the Versus network, will be shown on the big outdoor screen at Mellon Arena.

Q: Why can the Penguins show some games outside Mellon Arena but not others?

A: NHL rules allow public showings of games that cable networks (Versus) televise but not broadcast channels (NBC). Those rules were sent to franchises, including the Penguins, in advance of the playoffs, confirmed an NHL spokesperson.

Q: What's the distinction between cable and broadcast?

A: Cable networks have a dual revenue stream, generating income from both cable subscription fees and advertising sold. Broadcast networks only get revenue from advertising. The cost of ads is based on ratings. Broadcasters don't want viewers watching game telecasts in mass gatherings because those viewers would not be counted in the ratings.
