Steelers relive Super season
Saturday, May 30, 2009

At 12:58 p.m. yesterday, Ben Roethlisberger threw a pass to the corner of the end zone, and Santonio Holmes leaped into the air and made the catch, making sure to touch both feet in bounds to seal the victory in Super Bowl XLIII. The crowd watching in the East Club Lounge at Heinz Field clapped in approval.

All the highlights from the 2008 season -- including three victories against Baltimore, two James Harrison forced fumbles against the New England Patriots and one Super Bowl victory -- were condensed into a new 23-minute highlight film titled "Brothers and Champions, The Story of the 2008 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers."

The video, produced by Bethel Park-native Jon Weiss of NFL films, ran through the regular season before culminating with scenes from the victory parade. It mentioned early season injuries to Willie Parker, Kendall Simmons and Marvel Smith that forced the team to adjust on the fly while playing the NFL's most difficult schedule in 40 years.

The rest of the film was highlights from the 12-4 regular season and postseason, including sideline footage not seen on live game broadcasts. Mike Tomlin was shown encouraging his offensive line to make a play the 23-20 overtime victory against the Ravens in Week 4.

In another sideline shot from the Super Bowl, Holmes is shown roaming the sidelines saying "time to be great" and "I want the ball" right before his winning catch. It gave the sponsors, employees, dignitaries and friends of the Steelers in attendance a new perspective on the past season.

The NFL's best defense is spotlighted as well, with most of the AFC-high 51 sacks shown throughout the film. And, of course, James Harrison's record-setting, 100-yard Super Bowl interception return is shown in its full glory.

"NFL films had some good materials to work with this year," Steelers president Art Rooney II said, addressing the crowd before the screening. "It was an awfully exciting season, and we thank you for your support.

"It's no question that the support that we have inspires our team to work harder and play harder, and the results speak for themselves."

There were no current players in attendance, but Steelers chairman Dan Rooney was there along with KDKA Radio's Larry Richert, the video's narrator, and Bill Hillgrove, the voice of the Steelers and Pitt. Hillgrove and Tunch Ilkin's radio calls are featured in the video along with Richert's narration.

Right before the journey down memory lane, Tony Quatrini, the director of marketing, congratulated the Penguins on their success and set the stage for another championship celebration.

"Maybe they can have a highlight video that ends like ours," he said.
