Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay: Perch were still hit or miss as of yesterday, with catches coming in 42 to 58 feet. The evening walleye bite continued at the mouths of the creeks for anglers fishing from shore or trolling. Perch were hitting off the North Pier, and largemouth and smallmouth bass were active in the bay.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Big numbers of crappies and bluegills were reported in recent days. Although crappie sizes were running small, Susan Lutz of New Lebanon caught a 14-incher. A few walleyes and nice numbers of largemouth bass also were reported, although anglers are reminded that, until bass season opens June 13, it is unlawful to target spawning beds.
Neshannock Creek (Mercer County): Conditions remained low yesterday, as the area hasn't had significant rainfall in about 10 days. Dry fly fishing has been sporadic. On overcast mornings, hatches have included Blue-Winged Olives and small midges (sizes 22-24), Light Cahills (16), and March Browns (12-14). Brown Drakes (10-8) have started and Tan Caddis (16) were sporadic, but fish were taking them.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Tom Simon won the recent Three Rivers Muskies Inc. tournament with a 51-inch, 46-pound muskie with 26-inch girth. The winning weight in a recent walleye tournament was three fish totaling almost 15 pounds and the lunker was a nearly 7-pound walleye. The top take in a recent crappie tournament was five fish totaling more than 63/4 pounds; the lunker was almost 13/4 pounds. Anglers are reminded that the Linesville Marina has a floating fishing pier that extends about 100 yards into the lake, and a new shoreline fishing pier is adjacent to the spillway.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Bob Sarnese of Prospect caught a 10-pound, 9-ounce, 271/4-inch hybrid striped bass on a shiner Monday. "Wiper" activity has been heating up, while the crappie bite has plateaued. Bass turned on with the recent spate of warm weather (the season opens June 13). Mark Iarrapino of Butler reported catching walleyes up to 20 inches on leeches.
Allegheny River: Walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass and white bass were reported near the locks and dams in recent days. Some big crappies were hitting around the power plants. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers released 21 fish off the North Shore Wednesday. Highlights included Tommy Lippert's 26-inch smallmouth buffalo, and two 13-inch smallmouth bass caught by Ken Migliorese and Morgan Hezlep.
Ohio River: Russ Greshack of McKees Rocks caught a 41-inch, 291/2-pound flathead catfish on a homemade jig near Neville Island. Smallmouth bass were reported in Chartiers Creek and Montour Run, and walleyes at the mouths of those tributaries. David Hooper of Irondale, Ohio, won the May 23 Chester-Newell Catfish Tournament for a cat measuring 38 inches (next tournament June 20, 304-387-3982).
Ebensburg Reservoir, Wilmore Dam (Cambria County): A nice bluegill bite was reported in recent days at Ebensburg, while smaller crappies were hitting at Wilmore.
High Point Lake (Somerset County): Crappies, 10 to 17 inches, largemouth bass up to 20-plus inches, and northern pike up to 38 inches were reported at this mountaintop impoundment. Water levels remain low during the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's effort to control weed growth, but the agency has added gravel at both of its access sites to facilitate the launching of boats.
Youghiogheny River/Meadow Run (Fayette County): Fishing pressure was heavy in recent days after the May 22 trout stocking in the tailrace. Meadow Run was fishing well for bait and fly anglers.
Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Ryan Reiger of West Mifflin and Richard Fike of Farmington won last month's Yough Walleye Association tournament with a near-11-pound total that included the 43/4-pound-plus lunker.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Good flow was reported in recent days, along with tan caddis and sulphurs. Sulphur spinnerfalls were abundant toward dusk. Trout were rising occasionally to Tan Caddis (16) and sulphurs (14-16). Green Weenies, Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears and other nymphs were effective. Some midging was reported.
Deep Creek Lake (Maryland): Brian Murray of Farmington caught walleyes in mixed sizes up to 171/2 inches last weekend.
