The rain came and went yesterday -- and so, too, did the prospect of playing the remaining two WPIAL baseball championships at Consol Energy Park.
The Class A championship game originally scheduled for 5 p.m. yesterday was shifted to 1 p.m. today at Washington & Jefferson's baseball field, an all-artificial surface adjacent to Consol Energy Park, home of the Washington Wild Things.
In addition, the Class AAA title game pitting Moon against Chartiers Valley, originally set for 7:30 p.m. yesterday, will be played at 3 p.m. today at Washington & Jefferson. A Class A consolation game between Neshannock and Chartiers-Houston, which was to be held at 7 p.m. yesterday at Washington & Jefferson, will now be played at 5 p.m. today at the same venue.
At about 3:30 p.m. yesterday -- with Serra and Carmichaels just arriving at Consol Energy Park -- heavy rains pushed through the area, leaving standing water in just a few spots on the outfield. The infield had a tarp covering.
After the storm passed, Serra coach Brian Dzurenda and Carmichaels coach Dave Bates had a closed door meeting with WPIAL game managers and Wild Things officials.
"They told us the field was unplayable, I don't know," Dzurenda said. "And they said another storm was coming through. I know that we wanted to play, that's for sure."
With the opening round of the PIAA playoffs beginning Monday -- Carmichaels and Serra have secured spots in the field no matter what happens today -- the delays have forced a juggling act.
"Do we want to go out there, pitching-wise, and go after a WPIAL title," Dzurenda said, "or do we make a decision to split the innings up in the WPIAL championship game, with the focus on the PIAA bracket? There isn't an easy answer."
