Another black and gold team has one for the other hand.
The North Allegheny baseball team defeated Pine-Richland, 6-3, in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship last night at Consol Energy Park in Washington. The victory gave North Allegheny its sixth WPIAL title, all of them in the past 20 seasons.
North Allegheny (21-2) used a solid pitching performance from Ryan Oglesby, and his brother, Sean, had two hits and two RBIs as North Allegheny coach Andy Maddix won a championship in only his second season.
"This is a senior-dominated group and a very special group," Maddix said. "This group of seniors has been playing together since they were little and they've been very successful. One of the reasons we wanted to win this championship was so that we could just keep playing together for a few more days."
The six runs scored by North Allegheny tied for the second most against Pine-Richland this season.
On the other side, Oglesby limited Pine-Richland (19-2) to five hits in six innings and lifted his record to 8-0. A junior right-hander, Oglesby wasn't overpowering, striking out only two.
"He mixes pitches pretty well and hits locations," Maddix said. "Plus, he got ahead of just about every batter."
Pine-Richland coach Kurt Wolfe said: "He didn't walk anyone and he just kept getting the leadoff batter out in what seemed like every inning. We're a team that likes to take the play right at you and we couldn't steal, we couldn't bunt and we couldn't make things happen because we couldn't get guys on base."
When North Allegheny split two regular-season games with Pine-Richland, Oglesby didn't pitch either time. Instead, Maddix started Greg Piehler. Last night, Piehler relieved Oglesby in the seventh after Oglesby gave up a leadoff single. Piehler retired three batters in order.
"Greg had some success against Pine-Richland the first time he pitched, and they hit him hard the second time," Maddix said. "They're the type of team that any time they see a pitcher twice, they're going to have success. We thought maybe Ryan could have some success against them because they hadn't seen him."
The score was tied, 1-1, after 2 1/2 innings, but North Allegheny took control with three runs in the bottom of the third. Pine-Richland starter Vinny Nittoli, who threw a shutout in the semifinals against Kiski Area, pitched six innings and North Allegheny got to him for eight hits. He had defeated North Allegheny earlier this season.
In North Allegheny's third, Jeff Dassner singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. Sean Oglesby hit an infield grounder and second baseman Laneve tried to make a play at home, but Dassner easily beat the throw. Later in the inning, Brad Comport doubled to right-center field to score two runs and make it 4-1.
Pine-Richland added a run in the top of the fourth when Matt Berezo doubled and scored on a groundout.
But North Allegheny answered again in the bottom of the fourth on Sean Oglesby's RBI single. Sean Oglesby is the designated hitter who bats for his brother.
Pinch-hitter Kurt Devlin had an RBI single in the fifth for North Allegheny, and Pine-Richland's final run came in the sixth on Matt Yoklic's run-scoring double. Ryan Nussbaum was thrown out at the plate, trying to score the second run on Yoklic's double.
