A Verona man was killed yesterday in a one-vehicle crash in which the driver and two other passengers were injured in Armstrong County, state police said.
Deandre D. Hickman, 20, of Verona, and Justin M. Weston, 20, of Greensburg, were passengers in the rear seat of a Jeep Cherokee that crashed at 4:45 p.m. yesterday on Route 28 in South Buffalo, state police in Kittanning said.
The Jeep, driven by Tron J. Johnston, 24, of Worthville, Jefferson County, had been traveling south on Route 28 when it went out of control.
State police said the Jeep had been speeding and failed to slow down in time for slower moving traffic ahead of it.
The Jeep swerved to avoid a collision, driving onto a dirt median, then back onto the roadway before it flipped and rolled, police said.
The vehicle came to rest on its roof, its two rear seat passengers having been ejected as it flipped over.
Mr. Johnston and David J. Beatty, 22, of Mahaffey, Clearfield County, who had been riding in the front seat, had been wearing seat belts at the time.
Mr. Hickman was taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian where he was pronounced dead at 9:22 p.m., the Allegheny County medical examiner said.
Mr. Johnston was in serious condition today in Allegheny General Hospital. Mr. Weston's condition was not clear at AGH, a hospital spokesman said.
Mr. Beatty was transported from the scene, but it is not known to which hospital. Police have described his injuries as moderate.
