Last week: Femiani scored seven goals in an 18-15 victory against Upper St. Clair in the WPIAL Division I girls' lacrosse championship. It was the third championship in a row for Peters Township. Femiani had six goals in the semifinals.
Check this out: Femiani, a 5-foot-3 junior, is one of Peters Township's leading scorers with more than 40 goals. She has been on the varsity since her freshman year.
Why is Peters Township always so good in girls' lacrosse? I think we all just really mesh together. We're so team-oriented. We cheer each other on and get pumped up as a team. Everything just clicks together. When you don't have that closeness, I don't think you really get anything done.
But can you have closeness and still not be a good team? I think our coach [Kim Eldridge] has a lot to do with it. She really lights a fire in us and she'll kick our butts in preseason training. Even during the season, we always condition -- even though we hate it and hate her for making us do it. But she does it to make us better and it does.
What if hitting were allowed in girls' lacrosse? I know a lot of people would like that and a lot of people wouldn't. I think it might make things exciting, but I'm glad we don't have it because I don't like having to wear pads.
Is Jules short for anything? Yes, Julianne is my real name. My dad is the only one who calls me Julianne and that's only when he's mad.
Three things always in your refrigerator? Fruit. I really like fruit. Chinese food. Eggs. I eat a lot of eggs.
People might be surprised to know that ... I have to take a nap before every game.
Last week: Carr won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the PIAA Class AAA track championships.
Check this out: Carr won the 100 for the second year in a row. He is only the third sprinter in City League history to win the 100 and 200 in the same year at the PIAA level. Carr (5 feet 8 Â 1/2, 185 pounds) also was a talented running back on Peabody's football team, scoring 19 touchdowns as a senior. He will attend the University of Akron but will not be eligible to play football as a freshman because of academics.
Was it tougher to win PIAA titles this year than last year? In the 100, it wasn't tough, but it was tough in the 200. It was tough in the 200 because I'm really a 100 guy.
Were you surprised to win the 200? I was shocked. I saw some of the times on the heat sheets and they were fast. My fastest coming in was 21.9 (he won with a 21.35). I didn't think I'd run that fast in the 200.
You're going to Akron for football, but is there any chance of running track? There is a chance. I kind of want to, but I kind of don't, too.
You already know you have to sit out your first football season. How tough will that be? It will be tough because I haven't sat out since I started playing Little League. But I'll get to lift weights. I just can't practice or play.
It's 10 at night and you're hungry. What are you going to eat? Corn dogs.
You live in East Liberty and have said you are in a tough part of town. How tough? I live in the projects. I'm just trying to make it out like everyone else.
