Pregnant 18-year-old killed; was IUP student
Saturday, May 23, 2009

Shavaughn Wallace, the 18-year old pregnant woman shot and killed last night on the North Side, was a good student, doing well in her first year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, when she simply fell in with the wrong crowd, her grandmother said today.

"She did good in school, did very good in grades, but somewhere along the line she met up with the wrong people. She was kind of naive," said Shirley Gaines, 70, standing in front of the family's home on Dakota Street in the Hill District.

Ms. Gaines said she met her granddaughter's boyfriend a few months ago, when he came to pick Ms. Wallace up in his car, confronting him about his manners and asking about his family.

"We don't blow horns in front of people's houses. We get out and meet the people," she said she told him.

Ms. Gaines said she and her own mother, the victim's great-grandmother, helped raise the girl while Ms. Wallace's mother worked. She said her granddaughter attended St. Benedict the Moor School and graduated from Schenley High School, where she was on the dance team.

"She was my mother's baby," said Ms. Gaines. "My mother watched over her, didn't want her in school until she could talk and understand. We walked her through that period We tried to keep up with her and push her towards the right goals."

Police said Ms. Wallace had been sitting in a vehicle parked at 215 Alpine St. on the North Side about 11:15 p.m. yesterday, talking with a group of friends. A man stepped out of an overgrown lot at Alpine and Pryor Way and began shooting into the crowd.

Police said two vehicles were struck by bullets, including the one in which Ms. Wallace was a passenger.

Another neighbor said she heard multiple rounds of rapid-succession gunfire and then the sounds of a car speeding off.

"How can you take people's lives and don't think about it? How can you live like that? No conscience, no conscience," said Ms. Gaines.

Police said they had no idea what prompted the shooting and asked anyone with information to call them at 412-323-7161.
