WPIAL Lacrosse Championships: Mt. Lebanon Division I kings
Hampton finishes strong to win Division II
Saturday, May 23, 2009

Chris White had two goals and William Round was superb in goal as Mt. Lebanon held on for a 3-2 win against Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL's first Division I boys' lacrosse championship last night North Hills High School's Martorelli Stadium.

"Coach always says, if we win, 1-0, he'll be happy because we won the game," White said. "It was ugly out there at times, but, if we win it like that, all that matters in the end is that we won it and it's worth it."

Bijan Firouzan also scored for Mt Lebanon (13-7), which had won the old WPSLA six times.

"[Round] is a great, confident goalie, the best I've been around," Blue Devils coach Kee Joe Song said.

"And our defenders are mature and buy into what we have to do."

Shady Side Academy had a man-up situation for a minute during the game's final two minutes and had sustained pressure but could not score. The Indians got the ball past Round and into the net with 0.9 seconds to play, but the goal was waved off by the officials because the Indians had players in the goal crease.

"It was a little hectic at the end there," Round said. "But we always find a way to pull through."

Jason Deal and D. Tanner Jones scored for Shady Side Academy (10-9).

"It's tough, real tough," Indians coach Charlie DiNardo said. "We felt we had it. But what can you do?"

In the consolation game, North Allegheny (13-7) defeated Seneca Valley (10-9), 10-8, to qualify for the PIAA tournament. Both finalists also will play in that event.

Division II

nHampton 13, Greensburg Central Catholic 9: Hampton co-captain Kevin Meade couldn't find a way to explain his team's subpar first-quarter performance in the inaugural WPIAL Division II boys' lacrosse championship game.

"You tell me," said Meade, a senior attacker. "Maybe we were just nervous."

The Talbots' jitters quickly melted away, however, as Hampton recovered from a 4-1 deficit at the end of the first quarter to win going away, 13-9, against Greensburg Central Catholic. Jimmy Kuczynski had four goals and Meade and Rob Bosilovic two each for the Talbots (15-5).

"We couldn't really settle it down on offense [early], but, in the second half, our defense stepped it up, and that allowed us to do what we wanted to do on offense," Meade said. "Slow it down and go at our own pace and do what we wanted to do -- not what they wanted us to do."

Hampton allowed three goals in a span of 2:39 early in the contest but trimmed the Centurions lead to 5-4 by halftime. The Talbots outscored Greensburg Central Catholic, 7-1, in the third quarter as part of a 9-1 run that not only took control of the game but also put it away.

Jay Lunz had three goals and Ryan Neeven two for the Centurions (14-5).
