Two people were flown to Pittsburgh hospitals after a police chase that began in Carnegie ended in a crash in Washington County.
State police gave this account:
Troopers from the Pittsburgh barracks were on a traffic detail on Interstate 79 south, near Carnegie, about 11:30 a.m. when they clocked a motorcycle weaving in and out of traffic at 110 mph.
The motorcyle, also carrying a passenger, sped up when a trooper attempted to pull the vehicle over.
The chase continued into Washington County, where troopers from the Washington barracks performed a rolling roadblock in an attempt to slow traffic ahead of the motorcycle. Upon observing the slowed traffic, the motorcycle made a U-turn and traveled north in the southbound lanes, "directly toward the pursuing police cars."
The motorcycle missed one police car but struck a second. The motorcyclist and passenger were thrown from the bike and landed in the median with serious leg injuries. Their names weren't immediately available, and the hospitals treating them weren't named.
Both people on the bike were wearing helmets.
Police said "additional details are forthcoming."
The crash occurred about one-half mile north of the Racetrack Road exit in North Strabane Township.
