Unemployment benefits held up by computer glitch
Friday, May 22, 2009

About 100,000 jobless Pennsylvanians will be receiving a portion of their unemployment compensation a week later than they usually do.

The delay was caused by a computer glitch, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Labor and Industry.

Starting in February, people receiving unemployment nationwide got a $25-a-week boost in federal unemployment benefits. That extra money, part of the federal stimulus plan, is deposited separately from the rest of the benefits in Pennsylvania. For most people, who re-file for benefits every other week so long as they remain jobless, that additional money comes in the form of a $50 deposit, twice a month.

While the main part of the unemployment benefit was deposited on time, the extra $50 -- which should have been in people's checking accounts or on their debit cards as early as last Tuesday -- won't be there until next Tuesday, the day after Memorial Day.
