Ground beef products recalled nationwide
Thursday, May 21, 2009

An Illinois company today recalled 95,898 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

E. coli-caused illnesses in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois were reported and led to an investigation by the FSIS.

The FSIS says the meat poses a high health risk, which means it could cause death. The company, Valley Meats LLC, of Coal Valley, Ill., is recalling:

• Frozen ground beef patties and chopped beef sirloin steak burgers under the 3S brand and the Grillmaster brand.

• Frozen beef hoagie and beef dinner patties, chopped beef steak, veal luncheon meat, ground beef pattie, and steak burger products with the J&B brand.

• Frozen Klub ground beef steak and beef patties with the Klub brand, chopped beef steak under Ultimate brand, and other ground beef products with no specified name brand.

Each product has the establishment number "EST 5712" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The ground beef products were produced March 10 and were distributed nationwide. Consumers with questions may go to AskKaren.gov. or call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854.
