It doesn't feel much like spring outside.
With clear skies and calm to light winds prevailing overnight, temperatures plummeted in Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland. A record low temperature of 34 was established in the predawn hours today at the Pittsburgh International Airport, but some areas nearby were lower, even reaching into the 20s.
Around 5:30 a.m., Beaver Falls and Waynesburg were at 33 degrees, Erie registered 32, Butler and Washington, Pa., were at 30, and New Castle was at 29 degrees.
Because the growing season has begun in most areas locally, the National Weather Service issued a freeze warning from 3 to 8 a.m. today. Counties affected by the warning were Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland. The warning means the record low temperatures can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
Abundant sunshine this morning will vault temperatures into the mid 60s by this afternoon, but the chill will return tonight under mainly clear skies. Look for lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.
