As you motor along the narrow section of Route 28 between the Heinz plant and the 31rst Street Bridge, it's difficult -- and a bit dangerous -- to pay much attention to the few aging buildings that remain along the side of the road. Most are empty and lifeless and awaiting a demolition crew. A century ago, however, the street was home to a teeming Croatian neighborhood known as Mala Jaska. New arrivals from Croatia settled here to work in the area's steel mills, tanneries, pickle plants and other factories. They built a Croatian Hall and St. Nicholas Church and lived in homes like this one, which still bears some evidence of life.
