A Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council student has received an Outstanding Adult Student Award from the state Department of Education.
Diane Jordan, a single mother from Northview Heights, was honored recently along with eight other students and a volunteer tutor from throughout the state.
Ms. Jordan has three children, the oldest of whom is 5. She earned her GED in July 2008 and set a goal of getting training for a career in which she could support her family. She now is taking a series of tests for certified nurse assistant.
The help from the literacy council included a curriculum aimed at enabling those who have earned high school credentials to move on to postsecondary education or employment.
