Quick Getaway to ... Hampton
Friday, May 15, 2009

Where: Depreciation Lands Museum, 4743 S. Pioneer Road, just off Route 8, in Hampton.

How far: 20 minutes northeast of Downtown Pittsburgh

How much: Free

What for?: Observe how the pioneers lived through demonstrations, re-enactments and concerts during "Friendship Day" at this living museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Created by Hampton in 1973, the museum seeks to preserve and interpret the early years of European settlement in the Depreciation Lands -- land the state of Pennsylvania set aside to compensate its Revolutionary War soldiers.

Visit a blacksmith, village potter, schoolhouse, an encampment in the woods and other sights. There also will be a special demonstration of silhouette making, a technique used before photography to preserve images. You can also shop at the Talley Cavey Mercantile, a general store that specializes in 18th-century toys, pottery and household goods. At 2 p.m. the Old Economy Village orchestra and singers will perform early 19th-century music. If you can't make it this weekend, the museum is open 1 to 4 p.m. every Sunday through November, although there is typically a nominal admission fee. For details check the Web site, depreciationlandsmuseum.org, or call 412-486-0563.
