Senior linebacker draws suspension
Gunn involved in nightclub altercation
Thursday, May 14, 2009

Pitt senior middle linebacker Adam Gunn was arrested for his role in a scuffle with police officers Sunday outside Club Zen in Station Square.

Gunn was charged with two misdemeanors (resisting arrest and failure to disperse) and two summary offenses (public drunkenness and disorderly conduct). He was suspended indefinitely yesterday by head coach Dave Wannstedt, though he likely will be reinstated once the case is resolved in the courts.

According to several sources, Gunn and former Pitt linebacker Austin Ransom knew the bouncers at the nightclub and jumped to the front of the line. When several people objected, a minor scuffle broke out and police quickly jumped in. Ransom allegedly punched one of the officers, and a Taser was used on Gunn, who was intoxicated and did not leave the scene in a timely manner.

Ransom, because he threw a punch, was charged with felony aggravated assault and summary criminal mischief, in addition to the same charges as Gunn.

Ransom was held on $5,000 bail and was released after posting 10 percent. Both players will face a preliminary hearing today.

"On Monday morning I met with Adam Gunn to discuss his involvement in a weekend incident that occurred off campus," Wannstedt said in a statement issued by the athletic department.

"At the conclusion of our discussion, I told Adam he would be suspended from our team pending the resolution of this matter.

"This incident is both surprising and disappointing. Adam has always been a strong representative of our program and his involvement in this type of situation is very out of character.

"However, he knows and respects the fact that every member of our team must be accountable for their actions."

Gunn has worked as an intern in the athletic department and has been involved in countless community-service efforts. He has been named to the Big East All-Academic team two times, has already received his bachelor's degree in communication and rhetoric and is currently enrolled in Pitt's graduate school of Public and International Affairs.

Gunn is the fourth Pitt player in the past two months to be in trouble and the third one to get in trouble with the law.

Wide receiver TJ Porter (DUI) and defensive tackle Tommie Duhart (insubordination) were dismissed from the team last month, and wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin was charged with indecent assault, harassment and disorderly conduct for his role in an incident involving a female student on one of the campus shuttle buses.
