Dance studios are raising the barre in the third edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's dance recital listings. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School and Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company will feature dueling productions of George Balanchine's hallmark ballet, "Serenade." Ballet Classique will counter with "Concerto For Six," choreographed by Jean-Pierre Frohlich, ballet master of New York City Ballet.

On the heels of Pittsburgh Ballet and Dance Alloy productions last year, Yough River Ballet Academy has its own student-friendly version of "Alice in Wonderland." But Dancespace304 can trumpet Beethoven's only "true ballet," called "Dance Fables of Prometheus" with original scenic design by Harry C. Holland. Also look for variations on "Sleeping Beauty" at Carnegie Performing Arts Center and a trio of original works by resident choreographer Judy Rae Tubbs at the Laurel Ballet.

Once again, creative themes abound. Addis Studios has initiated a rarity, live music, for its recital, "Music That Makes Me Dance." About half of the students will perform to a live combo, "Friends," in a show that will feature a soda shop backdrop complete with jukebox. The Dance Factory will offer "Dressed for Success," in which all the routines will represent a career choice, ranging from bankers to zoo keepers and including camp counselors, chauffeurs, florists, moms and travel agents.

Among the competing schools, Reign Dance Productions will spotlight Miss Dance of America 2009, Kaitlyn Reiser, among a bevy of championship dancers.

And it looks like things are on the upswing despite hard financial times. Squirrel Hill's Bodiography is expanding its studio space and Just Dance Conservatory, celebrating its 10th anniversary with "Grease," has joined forces with Body MatRx Fitness. The Thomas Studio of Performing Arts is moving to a brand new 9.000 foot dance facility in September.
