Wednesday, May 13, 2009

A University of Pittsburgh senior who serves as a volunteer firefighter in Monaca, Beaver County, has been arrested on arson charges relating to the burning of a couch during post-Super Bowl celebrations on the Pitt campus in February.

Police arson investigators arrested Andrew Ablog, 22, of Monaca, on Monday evening after reviewing an Internet video that they said showed Mr. Ablog pouring lighter fluid onto a burning couch Feb. 1, after the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Police said they were tipped to the video by a concerned student.

Mr. Ablog was being held in the Allegheny County Jail on charges of arson and risking a catastrophe. A hearing was scheduled for May 21 in City Court.

Authorities said the investigation into the campus fires is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police bureau's arson squad at 412-937-3078.
