HARRISBURG -- After weeks of discussion, one part of Gov. Ed Rendell's health insurance changes has passed the Legislature and is on its way to his desk for signature.
Senate Bill 189, sponsored by Sen. Jake Corman, R-Centre, was approved by the House today after previously being enacted by the Senate. It was similar to House Bill 838, sponsored by Rep. Mark Longietti, D-Mercer, that had already been approved by the House.
The bill permits extension of parents' group health insurance plan so their adult dependent children can be covered until they turn 30. Seventeen other states already have extended the age limit.
To be eligible, the child must be unmarried, have no dependents, be a Pennsylvania resident or be enrolled as a full-time college student and have no other health coverage.
Proponents said many young people are staying in college longer to pursue advanced degrees, and may be unable to obtain their own health insurance coverage into their late 20s. Other young adults take jobs that don't offer health benefits.
"It's an important piece of legislation and the governor looks forward to signing it," said aide Chuck Ardo.
Another bill that Mr. Rendell wants, extending the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council for five more years, is almost ready for a final House vote.
