
Hampton used a fine defensive play to spark its offense and surge to a 4-1, eight-inning win against Ambridge in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round softball game yesterday at Shaler.
Ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the seventh, Hampton surrendered a tying base hit, but Ambridge's (12-5) potential winning run was thrown out at the plate by Talbots center fielder Kristina Scott.
An inning later, Hampton (11-6) got an RBI single by Amanda Martinelli and a two-run single by Ellen Murray to secure the win.
Moon 12, Thomas Jefferson 0: An outstanding two-way effort from Alicia Aughton vaulted Moon(10-5) past Thomas Jefferson (12-4) at Fairhaven Park. Aughton tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11, and went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs.

Shaler 9, McKeesport 2: Shaler (11-4) scored seven second-inning runs to storm past McKeesport (12-6) at Gateway. Brit DeFazio and Sam Montoya each notched two RBIs for the Titans.
Butler 3, Kiski Area 2: Sadie Marak's two-run double in the first propelled Butler(10-5) to a win against Kiski Area (11-5) at Hampton. According to Butler's first-year coach Lori Kline, it's the Golden Tornado's first playoff victory in 14 years.
Bethel Park 4, Plum 2: Paula Valdisera cracked a second-inning, two-run home run to spark Bethel Park(12-5) to a win against Plum (12-6) at North Allegheny.
Hempfield 2, Peters Township 0: Angie Camilla and T'Nia Falbo hit run-scoring singles to lift Hempfield(12-4) to a victory against Peters Township (11-6) at California University.
Avonworth 14, Monaca 0: Avonworth's Julie Eck dominated Monaca (9-6), throwing a no-hitter and striking out a career-high 19 to help the Antelopes (12-6) route Monaca at Shaler. Marissa Milbert added a two-run home run.
Mount Alvernia 3, Fort Cherry 1: Freshman pitcher Alex Bauer scattered four hits and Danielle Obernauer had two RBIs as Mount Alvernia (8-4) upset Fort Cherry (14-3) at Burgettstown.
Leechburg 10, Rochester 0: Every starter scored for Leechburg (14-3) in a five-inning win against Rochester (8-8) at Hampton. Keri Barnes and Heather Zack each knocked in two runs for the Blue Devils.
Carmichaels 4, North Catholic 2: Lynne Christopher's two hits and two RBIs helped Carmichaels (14-2) erase a two-run deficit and defeat North Catholic (8-7) at Fairhaven Park.
Chartiers-Houston 6, Riverview 2: Chartiers-Houston(14-7) benefited from two Riverview (10-5) errors to score five runs in the third at North Allegheny.
