Woman killed in Indiana County crash
Saturday, May 09, 2009

A 57-year-old Indiana County woman was killed yesterday when the vehicle she was driving crossed into the oncoming lane, sideswiped one car and then hit another head-on, state police reported.

The driver was identified by the Indiana County Coroner's office as Sharon Elaine Truitt of Lutz School Road. Coroner Michael A. Baker said it is possible Ms. Truitt may have lost control of her vehicle due to a diabetic problem. That will be confirmed through toxicology tests whose results are pending, he said. However, the cause of death has been ruled as blunt force trauma to the chest received in the crash.

According to state police, the accident occurred about 9 p.m. as Ms. Truitt was traveling north on Old Route 119 near the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. For unknown reasons, her vehicle steered across the double yellow lines into the southbound lane where it sideswiped an SUV driven by Jillian R. James, 22, of Homer City causing the vehicle to rotate counter-clockwise onto the west berm.

Following that impact, Ms. Truitt's vehicle then hit head-on into a car driven by Tonya J. Cuevas, 21, of Indiana.

Ms. Truitt was pronounced dead at the scene. Ms. James received a minor injury and Ms. Cuevas received a moderate injury, police reported.
