The U.S. Department of Transportation this week announced $742.5 million in new stimulus grants for mass transit projects, but the Port Authority, seeking additional funding to complete the North Shore Connector subway extension, got nothing.
The funded projects were in Arizona, California, Colorado, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington state.
Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie said the funding "was one of the pots we were looking at and were eligible for. It was one of our possible sources." But he said there remain several other sources from which the authority hopes to obtain additional funding, and that the $552.8 million project was not in immediate danger.
In January, the authority acknowledged that costs of the extension to PNC Park and Heinz Field had soared $117.8 million above previous estimates, and warned of a possible halt to the half-finished project if more funding couldn't be found.
Since then, the agency has secured nearly $62 million in extra funding under the federal economic stimulus program, formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Mr. Ritchie said the connector project, which is slated for completion in 2011, has sufficient cash to continue construction for at least a year.
