Fishing Report: 5/7/09

Lake Erie: Sam Stellitano of Sharpsburg released 35 smallmouths up to 61/2 pounds, 8 largemouths 3 to 41/2 pounds and a 40-inch catfish in 4 to 8 feet Thursday near Hammermill. All were caught on tubes, crankbaits, jointed crankbaits and stickbaits. In Presque Isle Bay, the perch bite has started. Crappies and bass also were hitting in recent days. Some anglers were targeting smallmouth bass in the lower reaches of the tributaries.

Clarion River (Clarion County): The upper section near the mouths of Blyson and Cathers runs, and the lower section near the mouths of Canoe Creek and Turkey Run, have been yielding trout.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Jim Lunsford and Rick Lewis of Washington, Pa., won Saturday's Keystone Bass Buddy Circuit tournament with a 6-largemouth limit totaling 171/4 pounds. The 43/4-pound lunker largemouth was caught by Eric Marsh and John Hilson. A total of 101 teams caught 337 fish totaling 6161/2 pounds.

Shenango Reservoir (Crawford County): The crappie bite turned on last weekend, with anglers catching big numbers in mixed sizes.

Allegheny River (Armstrong County): Bass, walleye and muskie were reported from Emlenton to Parker. Walleyes, including many of sublegal size, were reported around the hydroelectric plant near dam No. 6.

Crooked Creek Lake (Armstrong County): The crappie bite remained slow last weekend.

Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County): Angling pressure was light in recent days, although anglers reported nice yields on sucker spawn, olive Wooly Buggers and small minnow plugs in the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Jonathon O'Neill of Butler caught a 2-pound, 6-ounce, 161/4-inch crappie with 16-inch girth Monday. Some hybrid stripers were picked up this week, with the Swamp Run and boat rental areas especially productive. A 22-inch walleye was caught on a worm harness Monday.

Hereford Manor Lakes (Beaver County): The upper and lower lakes were stocked Saturday.

Allegheny River: Jay Lehman of Verona released a 41-inch flathead catfish on a chicken liver near Verona.

Ohio River: Jason Coe of Industry won the Chester-Newell Catfish Tournament with a 34-inch catfish caught April 25. Tournaments run every other weekend through the summer on the Ohio River between Pittsburgh and Wheeling. The next tournament is May 23. For more, call 304-387-3982.

Laurel Hill Creek (Somerset County): A stocking Tuesday near Ursina brought anglers to the creek.

Casselman River (Somerset County): An 18-inch smallmouth bass was caught near Boyton.

Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County): Crappies, northern pike and bass were reported at this 112-acre mountain impoundment.

Donegal Lake (Westmoreland County): A channel catfish near 30 inches was released at this 90-acre impoundment Saturday.

Linn Run (Westmoreland County): This small stream in Linn Run State Park yielded limits of newly stocked brook trout Saturday.

Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): New Yorker Chris Cursio boated a 41-pound, 6-ounce striped bass trolling a deep-running lure in 18 to 20 feet last week.

Canadohta Lake (Crawford County):Kirk Capezzuto, formerly of Pennsylvania, released a 33-inch muskie and a tiger on a Rogue while fishing with his brother John and friends May 2.
