The WPIAL announced its third annual sports Hall of Fame class this morning at a news conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.
The class includes three teams and 14 individuals. Among the individuals are Stan Musial, one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history, and Lauryn Williams, an Olympic silver medalist.
Also included in the class is John Challis, a former Freedom High School student and winner of the first WPIAL Courage Award. Challis' courageous battle with cancer became a national story last year before he died last August.
Among the teams selected is the 1965 Midland basketball team, which went undefeated and featured two of the WPIAL's greatest players -- Simmie Hill and Norm Van Lier.
The Hall of Fame class is selected by a committee, based on nominations from schools and also members of the committee. Induction ceremonies for this year's class will be June 19 at the Embassy Suites in Moon Township.
The WPIAL wants individuals selected to its Hall of Fame to attend the banquet, unless special conditions prevent their appearance. WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley acknowledged some potential Hall of Fame members have not been selected because they are unavailable for the banquet.
"We still feel that, once again, we have a class of teams and individuals whose tremendous accomplishments certainly make them deserving of being in this league's Hall of Fame," O'Malley said. "We know there are some awfully impressive individuals who are not in the hall, and hopefully circumstances in the future will allow them to be part of this."
Selections to the Hall of Fame fall into six categories -- athlete, team, coach, official, contributor and Courage Award winner. Here is the class of 2010.
