The Spring Hat Luncheon
Tuesday, May 05, 2009

Somebody up there likes Meg Cheever. The 11th annual Spring Hat Luncheon went off without a drop of the rain that had been predicted for days, dampening the spirits of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy staff. Each year they create a festive environment in a different city park, helping to raise more than $40 million for the organization Mrs. Cheever founded in 1997.

What the conservancy has done with the money is visible in each of the five urban parks -- projects like the new Riverview Chapel Shelter, Schenley Plaza and the Highland Park Entry Garden. Through its efforts and partnerships with the city and county, the revitalized parks are a major reason Pittsburgh has earned its Most Livable City title.

Saturday it was time again for Schenley Park, and a crowd of more than 500 stylish guests gathered beneath a tent erected on the scenic overlook. A chill in the air didn't keep much under wraps. The hats were fabulous as always, and after mimosas it was time for lunch and a first glimpse at the stunning tables designed by Jeff Pierce and Tom Bedger of Toadflax. Blue-and-white porcelain bowls were loaded with orchids, and matching chinoiserie vases that echoed those on the linens held assorted fresh cut flowers. The effect was instant spring.

WTAE's Sally Wiggin served as emcee and introduced both Mrs. Cheever and Eva Blum of sponsoring PNC Financial Services. A video on the parks featuring PNC CEO Jim Rohr followed, along with remarks from County Executive Dan Onorato and board chair Jerry Voros. No entertainment was required once lunch was served -- the Duquesne Club prepared an elegant menu of roasted corn puree, smoked turkey on cranberry rolls, poached halibut and a white chocolate mousse bonnet.

Everyone was there, of course, but special recognition goes to chairs Peggy McKnight (with Steve), Charena Swann (with Lynn), Christine Hilliard and Susie Dorrance (with Roy), honorary chairs Ritchie Scaife and Audrey Hillman Fisher (with Tim) and advisory council members Dr. Helene Blodgett (with daughter Rosie), Nadine Bognar and Ranny Ferguson (with Jay and son Bill).
