National Endowment for Arts gives $2 million in grants

The National Endowment for the Arts has announced more than $2 million in routine grants to Pennsylvania arts organizations, including $77,000 for the Port Authority of Allegheny County to conserve and move the Gateway Center subway station's monumental ceramic mural by Romare Bearden.

Other recipients: August Wilson Center for African American Culture, $40,000 to explore the role of older women in black culture; Carnegie Institute, $50,000 for reinstallation of the Carnegie Museum of Art's decorative arts collection; Carnegie Mellon University, $15,000 for the Architecture Building Communities project; Civic Light Opera, $20,000 for education and outreach programs; Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, $25,000 to preserve archival recordings.

Also, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, $25,000 for a high-definition production workshop; Pittsburgh Glass Center, $10,000 for artist residency; Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, $7,500 for chamber concerts of works by American composers; and Pittsburgh Symphony Society, $50,000 for a community outreach concert.

The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts also received $978,700 for regranting and administrative costs.
